But then unsurprisely, now that I think back... the last asian TV drama I followed with such interest was another Korean period Drama, Jumong... haha....ha...ha....
The story is about the rise and political struggles of the historical Queen Seondeok of Silla, one of the three kingdoms in early Korean history. Historically she's the first Queen to rule the kingdom and her foreign policy in improving ties with the China eventually leds to the Kingdom unification of the Three kingdoms after her death.
What cause my interest in this show is not only it's historical background and also the show took place in around the same time of Jumong, another historical period drama which was on the rise of a great king of a rival kingdom. Thus I was initially interested to see how that character was protray in this new drama, but the characters just draw me in as it.
The fun part was, I didn't started from the beginning of the show, my mum was watching in the living room while I was working in my room. But as I hear the conversation of the characters in the show, it slowly got me interested, and I did a research on the background of the show and beginning following the show soon after.
While the show is best on historical characters, the scriptwriters had certainty make the show more dramatic, in it Queen Seondeok or Deokmun was abandoned as a child having being born as the younger of twins due to a ancient prophecy that twins will soon end the male line of the royal family. And for the first half of the show, it involved her trying to discover her real identity then regaining her title as princess, while the second half is about her struggles to root out her main rival and at the same time attain the throne.
Two characters stood out of the award winning cast. And luckily both are the main characters, hahahah it's not nice to see the main cast being overshadowed by the supporting cast right
The older Princess Deokmun (later Queen Seondeok), played Lee Yo-won. Well~ truely speaking, she isn't really what I will say to be a great beauty, that you usually see in most Korean drama, but she had the kind of girl next door look, and in some scenes it really make you want to protect her. And a large part of her role had her character disguised as a guy in a military unit, so in that situation a very pretty girl(Which is usually a common sight in Korean entertainment) wouldn't have work as well.
And the other main character Lady Mishil, played by Ko Hyeon-jeong who's Deokmun main rival throughout the show.
Well~ what can I say, she won the Korean Best actress for her role. Her character is outright scary, not in the sense of Health Ledger's psychotic Joker scary, but more in the kind of real world scary, she is a master manipulator who used her wits and beauty to control the political will of the Kingdom. Her character had the gift of being able to see through lies and thinking of others, but she still maintain a poker face and sweet smile. I wouldn't want to meet a woman like her.
There are others good actors and interesting characters, but I will leave you guys to check it out
